Ocean City’s Arbor Day Celebration planned for April 26

ad 10bThe Town of Ocean City celebrates Arbor Day on Friday, April 26 at Northside Park, 125th Street bayside. Second grade classes from Ocean City Elementary School will present skits, poems, songs and artwork to show the importance of trees in our environment.

For over 25 years, the Ocean City Beautification Committee has partnered with the students to bring this program to the community.  Also during the celebration, the Mayor and City Council will be presented with two prestigious awards. The first is the National Arbor Day Foundation’s “Tree City USA” award, which the town has received for the past 25 years. Ocean City was the first barrier island in the country to receive this award. The second is the Maryland Community Forest and the Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service’s Maryland P.L.A.N.T. (People Loving and Nurturing Trees) Community Award, which Ocean City has received since the program’s inception 21 years ago.

The highlight of the event is when students assist the Mayor and Council in planting a tree at Northside Park as part of the Beautification Committee’s TreeMendous Program.  The celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Northside Park community room with light refreshments. The festivities then move outdoors where the ceremony takes place weather permitting. The celebration kicks off with the presentation of the flags by the American Legion Color Guard. Following the tree planting, the students will enjoy demonstrations by the Ocean City Police Department’s mounted police and K-9 units.

All citizens and visitors are invited to join the Mayor and Council along with the Beautification Committee for this long-standing tradition. For more information, call Donna Greenwood, Beautification Committee Chairperson, at 410-289-7060.
