SUSTAINABLE OCEAN CITY

Community action

The Town of Ocean City established a committee called the “Green Team”. This is a group of individuals that are focused on protecting the resources of the community. They also are working to gather information on the specific actions outlined in the Sustainable Maryland Certified Program to get Ocean City Certified Sustainable! This website will highlight all that is being done to be a sustainable community.

Thermostat Recycling

With the development of Wi-Fi enabled thermostats it is important to remember that the old thermostats, many of which contain mercury, should not go into the trash.

With the Town’s “Trash to Energy Program” it is especially important to  remember to recycle the thermostats so they are not incinerated.

Mercury was a prominent element in  thermostats manufactured before 2006 and it is now actually illegal to sell them in Maryland… see code reference below.

010 Maryland Code
ENVIRONMENT
TITLE 6 – TOXIC, CARCINOGENIC, AND FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES
Subtitle 9 – Mercury
Section 6-905.2 – Sale of thermostat containing mercury prohibited.

6-905.2. Sale of thermostat containing mercury prohibited.
A marketer may not sell or provide a thermostat containing mercury to a consumer.
[2006, ch. 56, § 2.]

Here are two locations where mercury thermostats can be dropped off for recycling:
