Beach Patrol-Surf Beach Facilitator

Surf Beach Facilitators (SBFs) work with Beach Patrol Surf Rescue Technicians (SRTs) to supervise the one-block areas designated as surfing beaches that rotate along the ten-mile beach. SBFs work from 09:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, five or six days per week. They most often work in pairs, with one on each end of the surf beach. They use small, yellow versions of guard stands and red and yellow banners to establish and mark the boundaries of the beach. SBFs monitor the surfing area making sure that swimmers and surfers stay in their respective areas. They also enforce ordinances specific to the surf beaches, making sure only surfers are in the area, and that all of them have leashes on their boards. When there are no surfers in the water, SBFs take turns walking and/or jogging through the areas to the north and south of the surfing beach helping SRTs to enforce all other ordinances. SBFs also assist with lost and found children, first aid and other activities as needed. While they are not responsible for making swimming rescues, they are trained to assist with spinal injuries, sand hole collapses and medical emergencies. For that reason, all SBFs start at $15.65/hr and go through a week-long, paid Surf Rescue Academy along with SRTs. SBFs also go through training specific to their positions, such as setting up the surf beach, keeping statistics on surfer population and effective ways to approach beach patrons who visit the surf beaches. There is no physical test for the SBF position, but all candidates go through a personal interview where their communication skills are evaluated. For more information, call the Beach Patrol at 410-289-7556. To schedule an interview, please register electronically through our website at www.ococean.com/ocbp Click on the “Employment” link and scroll down to “Q: Are there any other positions offered by the Beach Patrol?” There you will find a link to register for an interview.
