Ocean City Recreation and Parks is proud to announce it has been awarded the Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation by the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS). Earning the Better Sports for Kids Quality Program designation demonstrates that Ocean City Recreation and Parks has taken steps to ensure a safe, quality playing environment for kids. Ocean City Recreation and Parks has proven it meets or exceeds key expectations for administering youth sports leagues. Parents have many choices when it comes to youth sports. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation is an important promotional tool to allow Ocean City Recreation and Parks to set themselves apart and gives parents confidence in their programs since they can take comfort knowing their child is in the best place possible to learn and compete in sports.

Ocean City Recreation and Parks is proud to receive the prestigious “Excellence in Youth Sports Award” from the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS).  NAYS is a national organization whose mission is “to educate, equip and empower youth sports leaders, volunteers and parents so all children can enjoy the lifelong benefits of sports.”  This award recognizes programs that are doing superior jobs of conducting diverse activities with a focus on providing safe and positive experiences for all participants – including children, parents and coaches.  Each year hundreds of youth sports programs across the country and military bases worldwide vie to be an award winner.  The Excellence in Youth Sports Award is given for a specific initiative, process, project, campaign, element or component of a program that goes above and beyond.

Ocean City Recreation and Parks has been recognized for our annual Sportsmanship Ceremony held each March.  Players that exhibited exceptional sportsmanship during our youth sports leagues are invited to attend the exclusive Ocean City Sportsmanship Ceremony to receive the Al “Hondo” Handy Sportsmanship Award.  Hundreds of young athletes and their families pack Northside Park Recreation Complex to honor this accomplishment.  By singling out sportsmanship as the only award given out during our youth sports leagues, it reinforces the importance we place on character development over skill and athleticism.  This unique approach, combined with the incredible support we receive from parents, elected officials and staff, makes this event worthy of being recognized on a national stage.

Congratulations to the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department, our elected officials that have supported this initiative, and our past and future winners of the Al “Hondo” Handy award
