Town of Ocean City Recreation and Parks Debuts Northside Park Playground Replacement

Ocean City, Maryland – (May 16, 2023): On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department along with elected officials, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the replacement of a portion of the Northside Park Playground structure. The Town of Ocean City received a grant through the Department of Natural Resources’ Community Parks and Playground Program.

A modular play structure that was the centerpiece of the Northside Park 5 to 12-year-old playground for the past twenty-one years was replaced with a new modular play structure. The new, updated modular structure includes a variety of slides, bridges, climbers, and interactive play panels designed to encourage social play and enhance fine motor skills. In addition, an old rock climbing wall was removed and replaced with two unique stand-alone play features, which include a “Vista Tree Top 3” combination net spinner and climber for multiple users to enjoy climbing and spinning together, and a surfboard play element designed for children to balance, rock, and sway alone or with friends.

Recreation & Parks Director Susan Petito said she was “excited” to re-open the playground and credited her team for a job well done, stating, “Our Parks team, under the leadership of Superintendent Gary Collier, has done an excellent job in assuring the new play equipment blends with our existing equipment, and that the new elements and updated surfacing provide fun, challenging and safe play opportunities for the community.” She continued, “We are grateful to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for their support in making this first phase of our Northside Park playground replacement possible, and, of course, we are always grateful to the Town’s leadership for their support in helping us continue to improve the quality of life for our residents and visitors.”

The installation of the new equipment and surfacing has been completed and the playground was opened to the public on April 21, 2023.
