What should I do to prepare for CERT Basic Training?

Visit the FEMA training website for general information on how to take FEMA Independent Study courses.

You must complete the following two, free, online FEMA Emergency Management Institute courses.

IS-317.A: Introduction to Community Emergency Response Team (CERTs)

As a pre-requisite for CERT Basic classroom training or just to learn more about the program, check out EMI’s Independent Study (IS) course IS-317.A.

IS-315.A: CERT and the Incident Command System (ICS)

IS-315.A educates CERT program managers, trainers, or emergency responders on CERT’s relationship to the Incident Command System (ICS) and potential roles CERTs play in a disaster or emergency situation.

If you don’t have one already, you must register for a FEMA Student ID (SID), which is free.

After you have completed each course, take the online exam. If you pass the exam by getting at least 75 percent of the answers correct, FEMA will email you a link to a printable certificate (in PDF format) to verify your completion of each course. Please forward the two FEMA emails with the links to the certificates, or e-mail PDFs of the two certificates, to [email protected]

You must complete all prerequisites and all units in the CERT Basic Training to receive your nationally recognized Certificate of Completion.
