LPR ALERT LEADS TO A WARRANT ARREST
OCEAN CITY, MD – (April 16, 2021): On April 14, 2021, Ocean City police officers arrested Carlos Smullen, 49, Berlin, Maryland on an arrest warrant. Smullen was wanted for a first-degree assault involving a handgun that occurred on April 10, 2021, in Berlin, Maryland.
Ocean City Police Department received a license plate reader (LPR) alert in the evening hours of April 13th regarding a Jeep Compass entering Ocean City via Route 90. The alert notified officers the Jeep was associated with a person who had an outstanding warrant for their arrest for a first-degree assault involving a handgun.
Officers with the Ocean City Police Department were able to locate the vehicle unoccupied at a north-end hotel. Through a joint effort among members of Patrol, Special Enforcement Unit, and Narcotics Unit, officers were able to take Smullen into custody without incident.
“I would like to commend our officers for their due diligence and the coordinated efforts among divisions to safely bring Smullen into custody” commented Chief Ross Buzzuro. “This is another incident where the LPR system has proven to be a valuable tool to help keep Ocean City safe”.
Smullen was seen by a Maryland District Court Commissioner and held without bail. Smullen has been transferred to the Worcester County Jail for a bail review.
