Ocean City Beach Patrol, Pre-Employment Testing for Summer 2024
Ocean City, Maryland – (August 2023): The Ocean City Beach Patrol (OCBP) will hold a pre-employment physical skills evaluation (PEPSE – testing) on Wednesday, August 9th to fill openings in the 2024 roster. This is the first of three PEPSEs this August for our 2024 team. The pre-employment evaluation is being held in Ocean City, in the area of Dorchester Street and the beach. There are no pre-certification requirements and experience in ocean rescue is not necessary to apply. All training and certifications will be provided in your choice of a paid Surf Rescue Academy, which is being conducted in Ocean City, beginning May 19, 2024, or a later academy on June 16, 2024.
Registration / check-in for the test begins at 9 a.m. on Dorchester Street and the Boardwalk. After orientation and an English language proficiency test, applicants will participate in a full day of testing. Candidates will run 300m in the soft sand, swim 400m in the ocean, perform simulated swimming rescues, and demonstrate strength and endurance abilities over the course of the day.
Although pre-registration is not required and walk-ons are welcome, candidates are strongly encouraged to pre-register for the test by visiting www.JoinBeachPatrol.com. Candidates must be at least 16 years old to take the test and be 17 years old by June 24, 2024 to be hired by the Beach Patrol for next summer. A valid driver’s license, birth certificate, age of majority card, or U.S. passport is required at the time of registration. Without proper proof of age, applicants will not be permitted to participate. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian during the entire testing process.
Following the physical skills evaluation, those meeting qualifying standards are eligible for appointment to one of two paid Surf Rescue Training Academies (SRA), which will be conducted in Ocean City beginning on May 19th and June 16th of 2024. The SRA includes eight days of training and conditioning during which all certifications required to be a Surf Rescue Technician will be earned.
